As you are probably aware of, there is an epidemic in our country – an estimated 60-80% of adult Americans are “inactive”, meaning they are not actively participating in fitness or recreation activities. This has led to a high number of obese adults in our country. Most research shows that less than 20% of the U.S. population accounts for over 80% of sport participation (Coakley, 1998). Sport has been impacted by and has made adjustments for different types of athletes in our population already. Such adjustments and additions include Clydesdale and Athena categories in running and triathlon races which represent weight classes for competitive athletes. There are well established programs such as the Senior Olympics designed specifically for senior adult athletes. From a sport management perspective, there is evidence that these special athlete populations have had a financial impact on the sport industry including event management, equipment, and many other areas and the potential for growth is apparent. What if !? For our Discussion this week, consider the following: What if that 60-80% of inactive Americans began to participate regularly in recreational and sport activities? What changes would this lead to in the way that sports are organized and defined by most people? Would there be a switch to more “pleasure and participation” sports from the current emphasis on “power and performance” sports in society? How would the business of sport be impacted or change if this occurred? This is for my sports management class so can you keep it sports related. It has to be 2 pages and extremely detailed. Also can you cite your sources
