1. Review the Questions to Consider in Chapter 14 of the CPJ (p. 293).
2. Answer these questions by integrating the different parts of historiography in Chapter 14.
For example the difference between primary and secondary documents, the question of
supernaturalism, cyclical vs. linear concepts of history, secular vs. Christian notions of
progress or of the goal of history (End times?). Give examples from history you are
familiar with.
3. Write a 150-200 word description (3-4 paragraphs or at least 5 observations) about the
understanding of historiography.
a. Remember: use the four-step methodology of understanding, analysis, evaluation
, and application! You may use the Bible for illustrations in the application, but not
final proof (we want to avoid “prooftexting.”)
b. You may also want to try to do the step called ‘synthesis’ by coming up with your
own new paradigm for this concept (along with your own illustrations).
c. Due to the fourth day of the workshop for full credit (see the grading rubric).
4. Respond twice to your classmates and once to the instructor by the end of the workshop.
The responses should focus on furthering the discussion of the topic and displaying what
you have learned.
2.
1. Review the Questions to Consider in Chapter 15 of the CPJ (p. 325).
2. In the discussion forum below, answer these questions by interpreting the debate about
the objective or subjective truth in different periods of philosophy in Chapter 15. Give
particular attention to the difference between an overall story of human history
(macro narratives) that provides meaning in a collective sense, versus the concept of a
society of individual human stories (micronarratives). What is your logical best
assessment of post-modernism and what it seeks to do?
3. Write a 150-200 word description (3-4 paragraphs, or at least 5 observations) about the
contrast between modernism and post-modernism. Conclude your remarks by reviewing
and assessing the list of 5 Christian inferences made by the author in 15.4 (p. 338-339) of
the CPJ.
a. Provide a critique of the author’s thesis in this textbook (both in Chapter 8 and
here), that a “critical-realist” approach is the best Christian approach in both
philosophical theory and practice. Do you agree with him? Why or why not?
b. Remember: use the four-step methodology of understanding, analysis, evaluation, and application! You may also want to try to do the step called synthesis, by
coming up with your own new paradigm for these concepts (and your own
illustration).
c. Due to the fourth day of the workshop for full credit (see the grading rubric).
