Classifications, Vocabularies, and Terminologies: Other Standards in Health and Health Care
Within any given area of specialization in health and health care, there are processes, practices, and procedures that are specific to that particular profession. In the same way that the daily activities a nurse engages in while delivering patient care are very different than those of a dentist or a pharmacist, so, too, do the specialty-specific health information needs of these care providers vary. To prepare for this Discussion, explore specialized standards from across a variety of specialty areas in health and health care, including the Regenstrief Institute's Logical Observation Identifiers Names and Codes (LOINC®) for laboratory and clinical observations, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's National Drug Codes (NDCs), the National Library of Medicine's RxNorm drug terminology, the American Dental Association's Current Dental Terminology (CDT), and the American Nurses Association's Nursing Interventions Classification (NIC) system. You will reflect on the historical development, purpose, and specialty-specific use of these specialized standards, while also taking a close look at the specifics of their respective structures and functions.
