Key Elements and Task
Task |
Group Poster presentation 500 words or
equivalent +/- 10% Elite Publications Elite publications are a small, specialist
academic book publisher based in Oxfordshire, UK. They employ 10 writers, editors and on-line
publishing specialists and compete in a very fluid market. The employees are mostly, UK citizens,
although the Finance Director is from Germany and there are some EU and
international authors sub-contracted to write books and articles. The main business of Elite Publications has
been directed at the European and North American university market and is
targeted to niche areas, often neglected by the larger academic publishing
houses. While hard copies have been provided in the
past, using a local supplier for print and distribution, increasingly, Elite
are concentrating on the digital market utilising technology to provide
e-books and journals. The business has
shown a slow rate of increase over the last 10 years, but this now seems to
be under threat from adverse exchange rates and market uncertainty, partly
driven by changes to UK university funding and Brexit. The business in family owned by Alice and Eric
Bookbinder, and is operated from a converted barn in their family farm. They
also employ people from the nearby Village of Pageturner, (population 136) and
have a policy of using local suppliers where possible. A mini-bus is used to collect employees and a
part time driver is employed for this task, she also tends the farm gardens. Recently, a new mini-supermarket opened in the
nearby town of Little Inkwell and they have a growing reputation as a best
practice employer as well as aggressive plans to expand throughout Oxfordshire. Task:
Using the STEEPLE (Social, Technological, Economic, Environmental, Political,
Legal and Ethical) model, critically evaluate and analyse the external
factors which could impinge on Elite Publications. |
