Description

Examine the social and political influence of the slave trade on African societies. Were there African societies that benefited from the slave trade? Relate the American concept of “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness” to slavery. How did these two concepts coexist? The narratives of Equiano offer unique access into the mind and experience of a slave in the Middle Passage. What can this source teach us that we can't learn from more traditional sources? Some historians have found evidence that leads them to believe that Equiano was, in fact, born a slave in South Carolina, and never made the journey through the Middle Passage. They are clear, however, that the essential truths of his descriptions of childhood in Africa are accurate and that the early parts of his autobiography reflect oral histories of other slaves and information he gathered out of books. Is his birth place significant? If it is true that he was born a slave in South Carolina, how does it affect the way we use Equiano's narratives?
