Background: In this final unit, we read several different authors discussing the influence of online reading on the way we read from several different angles. Bauerlein speaks from a position we may be most familiar with based on our reading of the topic thus far. He analyzes the effects of online, screen-based reading from a rather traditional perspective and argues for strengthening “print reading” skills in college classrooms. From a journalistic and perhaps more investigative point of view, Konnikova reports various research findings showing how and why the differences in the reading medium, either paper or screen, might lead to different levels of comprehension; she suggests important lessons to be learned from the current situation. 

On the other hand, Hayles and Sonoski make a departure from these familiar points of view. Hayles’s “out of the box” argument offers a fresh perspective on the importance of online reading strategies in today’s higher education as she points out why screen-based reading should be used as a way to improve college students’ reading ability. Additionally, we are challenged to put the current debate in perspective when we read Sonoski’s matter-of-fact style predictions made several decades ago, before the topic became a controversial issue. Against this backdrop, we ask what conclusion we can draw about the usefulness of screen-based reading on critical reading practices necessary in college level reading. Essay question: What conclusions can you draw from the effects screen-based and online reading have on critical reading in college? In response to this question, write an essay in which you argue whether reading on the screen and/or online aids or hinders critical reading practices necessary in college level reading. Criteria for successful completion of the assignment: Take a clear position and support it in a well-informed discussion on the topic.

 Drafts should include an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion that adhere to the structure of an academic essay taught in the course. Your thesis would comprise of your position and coherent reasons that logically reflect the discussion in the Body. Each body paragraph should be organized by a single, coherent theme, with a topic sentence that discusses a specific aspect of reading online and/or on paper. The topic sentences should be argumentative with a clear and strong assertion; they should not be factual. Your discussion should consist of substantial facts and examples from the sources that explain and support your topic sentences. This means that the discussion in each paragraph should not be organized in the same way the information is presented in some of your sources. 

Doing this will result in mere summaries of articles without an argument of your own or in some cases, plagiarism. Counterargument(s) must be included and addressed in logical and coherent manner. After a clear explanation of the opposing view(s), you should refute it and reinforce your own with relevant support (e.g., limitations of the counterargument and the validity of your own view). Each paragraph should be unified around one main idea that relates logically to thesis and should synthesize ideas from two or more sources. In total, you need to use at least five different sources that meet the criteria specified above. You should include specific facts and examples concerning college level reading/readers whenever possible. Even when you discuss general concepts regarding reading online and on paper, these facts and examples should be analyzed in relation to college level reading/readers.
