From Monarchy to Republic – Rome’s Political Development in the Early Centuries Rome’s political history has an undeniably “modern” feel to it, and it isn’t too challenging an intellectual task to find parallels between the events that took place during the Roman Republic and those that have taken place much more recently in the American Republic. And as any historian of early American history can tell us, the founders of the American Republic very consciously emulated what they thought were the best features of the old Roman constitution (in this sense, not a document of basic law but the political system as a whole). By contrast, even when the amoralism and gore of the Game of Thrones genre is ignored, the European Middle Ages, the “Age of Faith,” seems exotic to us, not to mention, of course, the history of, for example, the Chinese, Persian or Ottoman Empires
