Description

  1. Life couldn’t get much better for George O’Leary when he was named the head football coach at Notre Dame. Unfortunately, he barely had time to celebrate his new job before he was ruled ineligible: after just a week on the job, he was forced to resign, embarrassing himself, his family, his friends, and Notre Dame itself. Why? Because of a few lies that he’d put on his résumé twenty years earlier. Read the following article about O'Leary: Then answer the following:1. Was O'Leary's punishment appropriate? If not, what punishment would you have given him, if any? 2. If you were his previous employer, would you take him back? Why or why not? 3. What did you learn from this exercise? Please answer all three questions in this forum. Then Give your disagreement to this comment:
  2. 1. I think O'Leary's punishment was appropriate because the officials at Notre Dame were willing to look past the false claims he had made about his football career even when he offered to resign, the university refused it. However, when the officials asked O'Leary if there were any more discrepancies, O'Leary admitted that he had never received a graduate degree and that was when the university decided to accept his resignation.
  3. 2. If I were O'Leary's previous employer, I would consider taking him back but I would put him on probation or contract and by that I mean, for a certain amount of time, I would keep an eye on him, watch how he's doing and see how the season goes. If the season doesn't go well, then I would let him go. Even though he lied about his resume, it doesn't change the fact that he is a good coach. He has the experience and he has a good track record. Perhaps if I had known about his inaccuracies in his resume since the beginning, I would not have hired him in the first place but since time had passed and he did do a good job then I don't see the problem with rehiring him again.
  4. 3. From this exercise, I learned that it's best to not cheat the system. Even if the system is flawed, its best to build on honest work. Note that some things tend to resurface like this situation and it just doesn't seem worth it because of the cause and effect it had on O'Leary as well as Notre Dame.
