·         Task description:

o   You will prepare a listening log which includes a series of tasks on a subject lecture:

§  Grad Dip Finance and SS: (Thursday, 31st October, 9a.m. – 11 a.m., W07) Topic: The History of English

o   Before the lecture:

§  You will fill in a research sheet with pre-listening information on the topic of the lecture (e.g. definition of key concepts, vocabulary work, identification of main ideas from slides/assigned readings)

o   During the lecture:

§  You will take notes using the Cornell method of note-taking. You should also write down at least five questions about the topic as part of your notes.

o   After the lecture:

§  You will add key points and a summary to your notes;

§  You will provide a list of key vocabulary arising from this task. This may include items from the preparation task, but items will mainly be from the lecture and slides/handouts that accompany it. Include details of meaning, use, synonyms and antonyms and your own examples of usage;

§  You will identify and discuss similarities and differences between the contents of the lecture and other academic sources (e.g. other lectures, journal articles, book chapters);

§  You will provide critical questions which follow on from the lecture and/or other sources on the topic, and answer them by using your notes and other academic sources on the topic;

§  You will list the sources used in the task (e.g. dictionaries, thesauri, lectures) in your bibliography, which should be formatted in Harvard style.
