Description

Aim and Objective

On assignment 1, I have talk about smart home technologies, type of smart devices available in the market, how it became affordable over the years and summary on its present and future. In this dissertation proposal I want to research on its vulnerabilities and how smart home users may be able to protect themselves from such vulnerabilities.

Abstract

This paper discusses emerging smart home technology used. We'll be asking about the Apple Home Pack, Google's Nest Thermostat, Amazon Echo, Belkin’s Wemo Transfer, and IFTTT. Some of the organizations cover the specifications, system design, software models, and protocols.

Introduction

Home is the place where one fancies or desires to be after a long tiring day. Some are way too tired that they find it hard to move once they land on their couch, sofa or bed. Human assistants like housekeepers were a way for millionaires to keep up their homes in the past. However, not everyone is wealthy enough to be able to afford a human assistant. The need for finding an inexpensive and smart assistant for normal families keeps growing. Many automatic products and concepts have already come true and can be used at home. This paper reviews all the new Smart home technologies to help you make your home more comfortable and easier to live in with less work and a better quality of life.

Present And Future Of Smart Home Technology

The basic smart home systems have become a huge part of the lives of today's people. Systems such as motion detection, intelligent monitoring of the thermostat, adaptable luminescence, RFID, biometrics, IR scanning, RF scanning and CCTV protection have become very popular. Advanced software technology is now introduced, such as user identification through facial expressions, voice activated orders, organizing supporting, and counselling in everyday life tasks. Residential Automation adoption is increasing rapidly. According to ABI Research[1], in 2012 1,5 million home automation devices were deployed in the US, and a rapid growth in 2017 may see shipments reaching more than 8 million. Cisco CEO John Chambers anticipates a $19 trillion industry by 2020[2].

In 2014, Google paid $3.2 billion (£2bn) for a firm called Nest Labs[3]. Nest Laboratories in California develops 'smart' home appliances[2]. Nest was founded in 2008 by Tony Fadell, the so-called "iPod godfather," after leaving Apple 's position as music head[2]. While Nest has several research-oriented tools, there are currently only two items on the market in Nest Labs: the smart smoke alarm and smart thermostat. Nest aims to render home appliances smarter by supplying them with exclusive apps including a laundry machine that can tweet their status, the refrigerator they will call, etc. How much apps people like in their home appliances, is unknown.

We have a number of inexpensive and costly home control devices available on the market today. Each has a way to connect to the controllers of the system. The RF-based remotes, for example, will switch on and off the lights, a smart plug that can be operated by a mobile or laptop, which can then be used to monitor other appliances. Since the 1970s, detection of motions has been around. Opening the gates, is a perfect illustration of automation as soon as someone steps in front of it. Those are a few typical examples of a overwhelming majority of knowledgeable, and most critically, complex, structures.

Many of the top technology companies worldwide have been focusing on developing their own home automation system series. The work has already been continuing for a few years. Many of them have either come up with their version of the technology to be purchased by the general public, or have their initial prototypes ready for launch soon.

We'll be seeking to grasp some of the most advanced innovations on the sector. As mentioned in the abstract section, most of the companies' standards, hardware architecture, software models, and protocols are hidden; thus, we will try to speculate on the details of how they could implement their respective smart home technologies. Every company has its own specific designs and

Technology Standards

Internet of Things or IoT is a networking network for machines built on low weight microcontrollers. Every company each entity has its own specific way to incorporate IoT-based solutions. Wi-Fi, ZigBee, Bluetooth, Infrared or other wireless technologies form a focused, limited Internet of Things network. Some examples of the smart home system are the home kit from Apple, the Smart Things platform from Samsung and the smart home solutions from AT&T. This section explores the most commonly used standards and protocols.
