Assignment:
Identify a union that represents employees in Alberta and conduct detailed research on the union through multiple sources. Sources include: on-line research, personal contact with the union, materials prepared by the union, information from organizations directly involved with the union (ex. Employers, Alberta Labour Relations Board, etc.)
Purpose:
To become familiar with the history of the union, how it was formed and when; in which sectors it represents
employees; significant events in the life of the union (ex. Certification drive, strikes or lockouts, mergers with
other unions, etc.); the social issues it engages in (ex. gender equality, poverty, revising Labour laws, etc.) and the
current issues it is dealing with.
Assignment Sections (to be in paragraph format):
1. Introduction – Give a brief history of the union’s origins and identify the underlying reasons it was established. Identify in which organizations it represents employees.
2. Significant Events in the Life of the Union – Prepare responses to the following questions:
• What have been significant events in the history of the union (highlight at least three)?
• How did these events impact the union as an organization and/or how did it impact its members?
3. Current Issues – Prepare responses to the following questions:
• What are important issues this union is currently facing?
• How are they responding to these issues (ex. lobbying government, educating its members, etc.)?
• What social issues does this union work on (ex. gender equality, poverty, revising labour laws, etc.)?
4. Personal Observation – Prepare responses to the following questions:
• Would you want to be a member of this union?
• Why or why not?
