In one rural area in
Ethiopia there is a high incidence of child diarrhoea. Research has shown that
most mothers do not wash their hands with soap after visiting the bathroom and
after discarding child faeces. Furthermore, mothers wash their hands only with
water before preparing food or before feeding their babies. Mothers believe
that the child’s feces are harmless and that, as they eat chili most
days, germs will have no chance to grow in their bodies. A social and behaviour
change project is planned in the community to increase awareness, change belief
and increase the practice of handwashing with soap. The intervention includes
the production of posters, leaflets and training tools, training of health
development army members in the use of interpersonal communication, conducting
household-level counselling, community conversations and transmission of radio
messages.
