Description

INTRODUCTION:

In the first block of this year you will have been introduced to the central debates and theories in Developmental Psychology. As explained in your developmental course outline, you have engaged with an understanding of how to evaluate developmental theories and to consider some of the central debates and controversies around these theories. Simirlarly, the focus will now turn to Personality Psychology and an engagement with the central debates and controversies. Much emphasis will be placed on thinking critically about personality theory, with respect to the South African context, which includes looking at African and sócio-political perspectives on personality. Thereafter, we will continue engaging with the dominant mainstream/traditional psychological perspectives on personality that you will have covered during the developmental psychology block. The perspectives that will be covered are: psychoanalytic, cognitive, biological, trait, humanistic and sócio-culutral conceptualisations of personality. In going through each of these perspectives, we will also evaluate their usefulness for thinking about personality in the South African context.
