Description

In this assignment, you’ll be introduced to the IBM Cloud. Specifically, you will have an opportunity to use NLP and AI. Along with some help from IBM’s Watson you will analyze text and try to decipher the meaning contained in collections of words. With this new account, you can try a whole bunch of other fascinating technological marvels as well. Getting an account is fast and easy. Here’s how:

1.       Navigate to https://www.ibm.com/cloud/ and click the blue “Sign Up” button. You’ll select the “Lite” plan which is free.

2.       Once you’ve validated your IBM by verifying your email, you’ll login and find your dashboard. At the topic is a menu ‘Catalog, Docs, Support, Manage’. Select Catalog.

3.       On the Catalog screen you can scroll through all the services available to you on the “Lite” plan. Scroll down to the “Watson” section. If you want to build a Watson application, this is where you’d begin. This assignment does not require that you build an application. Now that you’re logged in, navigate to https://console.bluemix.net/developer/watson/starter-kits

4.       For this assignment, you’ll play with three demos and report what your findings.

5.       For the first demo, select the Watson Natural Language Understanding Starter Kit available here: https://natural-language-understanding-starter-kit.ng.bluemix.net/. In the URL tab, enter the following: https://www.washingtonpost.com/national/2018/02/18/03460d08-14ee-11e8-92c9-376b4fe57ff7_story.html?utm_term=.72cf644cf284. Scroll through the tabs, “sentiment, emotion, etc…” Report what you find. Repeat this exercise with a news URL of your choosing.

6.       For the second demo, choose Watson News Intelligence Starter Kit available here: https://watson-news-intelligence-starter-kit.ng.bluemix.net/. Search for any company you’re interested in and report what you found. Be sure to scroll to the bottom to get all the interesting tidbits.

7.       Finally, choose any of the remaining demos. Use it once or twice and report on what you found. I’m interested in hearing your thoughts on the quality of these apps. Did they meet or exceed your expectations? Do you see these types of apps having relevance in the healthcare industry? If yes, how?
