1.0 INTRODUCTION
Malaysia's automobile industry has been one of the leading and most important industries in evolving Malaysia national economy and turning Malaysia into a developed nation. Malaysia boasts four major automotive industries such as Proton, Perusahaan Otomobile Kedua Berhad (Perodua), NAZA, and DBRHICOM. Such car firms have a significant responsibility to develop employment, emerging new technologies and technical skills in the automotive manufacturing sector and enhancing Malaysia's foreign competition. All of this targeted at growing the country's dependency on imported goods produced abroad
In point of fact, Proton emerges from Perusahaan OTOmobil Nasional,
which in Malaysian almost transforms into a national car company. Proton is a
Malaysian automotive brand, founded in 1983, in accordance with the
aspirations of Tun Mahathir Mohamad, a recently retired Minister. Proton has
grown from the very first cart under collaboration with Mitsubishi Motors until
the development teams can build in our own local components. The
development of this product life cycle until it can finally well-established by its
own has made their history in Malaysia.
Development of the very first version, built upon technologies and
components by Mitsubishi Motors, the Proton Saga started its first
manufacturing plant in Shah Alam, Selangor in September 1985. Originally the
car's models were made exclusively by Mitsubishi, but eventually regional
components were included as innovations were imported and skills learned.
SAGA actually stands for “Safety, Achievement, Greatness and Ability”. The
Proton Saga was seen more than anything to show the true spirit of Malaysian,
signalling the country's industrial revolution. Therefore, purchasing and
possessing a Saga was pretty much like proving a true Malaysian by heart.
