Many health care organizations include information technology components as an essential part of their record-keeping capabilities. Sometimes, however, there are challenges associated with the use of that technology. For example, an organization’s patient records may be electronic, but accessible only through an outdated retrieval system that providers cannot access quickly or that they can only access from a handful of locations throughout the facility. Or perhaps an organization has implemented a state-of-the-art e-prescribing system, but it has not adequately trained its staff on how to use that system. In order to have an information technology strategy that optimally supports the delivery of care to patients, careful thought and extensive planning is required.
