Research Review
Problem Statement
Notably, poverty has been identified to be prevalent in Jamaica from the post- Emancipation period. Owing to that fact, poverty in Jamaica is a continuous subject of research in the Caribbean academics and practitioners for welfare (Anderson, 2020). High poverty levels have been noted to affect the health, education, social life, and Jamaicans' economic life. Certainly, in the previous decade, poverty eradication has been catered for in the local and international policies. In Jamaica, there are policy statements that show eradication of poverty despite the International lending policies' effort to push for social security reforms and assistance to the poor socially. This particular study seeks to identify Jamaica's poverty levels by the Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) employment as founded by the use of the multidimensional measurement method (Alkire and Foster, 2011). The global Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) is an international measure of acute poverty covering over 100 developing countries. It complements traditional income-based poverty measures by capturing the severe deprivations that each person faces at the same time with respect to education, health and living standards. The MPI assesses poverty at the individual level.
Additionally, it shall employ the three dimensions and 10 indicators of the MPI in the Jamaican population. Based on the information discovered, the study shall offer recommendations applicable in Jamaica. In particular, the study shall use data from Demographic and Health Surveys (DHS), Multiple Indicator Cluster Surveys (MICS), Pan Arab Project for Family Health (PAPFAM), and national surveys to find out the welfare and status of Jamaicans in Jamaica as compared to other individuals all over the world.
