A few tips about references, for use when you are proof-reading your paper:

  • Occasionally a team mistakenly uses the (author, date) citation method. No, please use the IEEE method [1]. This can be to your advantage, as I find fewer mistakes using IEEE.
  • Although I see that IEEE may allow you to list references which are not cited, please do not do so in this paper. All references should be cited, and all citations referenced. If you reference without citing, it looks like you are artificially inflating your reference list.
  • Don't forget to use a citation for your tables and appendices.
  • No citations in the executive summary, as the relevant text in the paper body is cited.
  • It looks clumsy if your IEEE references are out of numerical order. The order [1], [2], [3], [2], [4] is good. The order [9], [12], [3], [5], [4], [1] is bad.
