Web Field Trip: Visit Great Place to Work

Recruiting and retaining the best employees can be a challenge. One strategy that organizations use is to communicate a reputation for being a good employer. There are a number of ways to do this; for example, being known for paying the highest wages and salaries in the industry. Taking action to be a good employer and getting the word out are two different challenges. Regarding the latter one, that is, communicating to prospective job candidates, in the last few years a number of mechanisms have surfaced; for example, in the federal government the resource is titled Best Places to Work (Links to an external site.). Perusing this site, one can get a sense of how employees in the various federal agencies feel about their organization. A similar resource with a larger scope is Great Place to Work (Links to an external site.). Great Place to Work is sponsored by Fortune Magazine and is open to all organizations, regardless of industry or sector.

In 2012, the first public agency (City of Rancho Cordova, CA) made their list of the top 25 outstanding small organizations. You can read more about Rancho Cordova at the Rancho Cordova city website (Links to an external site) (Links to an external site.).

Another interesting resource, especially in evaluating potential employers, is Glassdoor. At this site you can see how employees anonymously ranked the best practices of their organization. I presume that a savvy employer would want to periodically check this site to see how employees are feeling - this is sort of the YELP of employment. Every year, Glassdoor releases a “Best Places to Work: Employees' Choice” awards list; you can view the 2018 list here: Best Places to Work 2018 (Links to an external site.) (links to an external site).
