Schools and Society Xijie Zhang Orestes Brownson and Horace Mann’s Education In this paper, I will argue that Orestes Broenson was in correct in his assessment of the undemocratic aspects of Horace Mann’s plans for common schooling and establishment of normal schools. I will support my opinion by discussing how Mann’s views are more appropriate than that of Orestes Brownsons. Mann was effort to reform common schooling, the benefit of good school buildings, good religion is an important factor in common schooling and female teachers were good for the students. But in Brownson mind people need the special education, religion is not a value of human life, and schools should be governed by men. Those two people had opposite views about education system, however I would like to agree with Mann’s views.
