Short Essay: Department Store Staffing A big US department store implemented a system for monitoring the store traffic with the goal to optimize the “conversion rate” (= the number of sales transactions per visitor) in the store. The technology was very sophisticated: store surveillance camera data could identify particular people or patterns of behavior. In particular, the solution could be used to count traffic in and out of the store and departments. Data was collected over a six month period and averaged per day of the week and per hour slot of the day. Using the information about the store and its staffing policies given below and the data in the two charts, please answer the following: • Why is store staffing important? Where do you think retailers operate in terms of overstaffing and understaffing. Why? • What changes would you make in staffing to improve sales/hour of labor in this store?
