Since your own family is an important process in considering your theory of change or theoretical orientation, it will be helpful to create your personal family’s Genogram. Create your genogram showing three generations, show relationship statuses, show living and deceased, include ages, add lines to depict at least three relationships you have with others, and add an identifier. See the specific guidelines posted on Blackboard. Be sure to include a key.
Blackboard guildline: Include three generations – make sure you indicate which symbol is YOU by making it larger or using color. (Use first names only)
Add a minimum of one the following identifiers and add to key. A good example of a genogram w/key: http://www.genogramanalytics.com/
In the paper, address the information stated in the syllabus, in addition to explaining the symbols and relationships shown on your genogram. Use course terminology; mentioning Bowen (see examples of symbols and explanations in the textbook). Required Textbook
Nichols, M. P., & Davis, S. D. (2020). The essentials of family therapy (7th ed.). Boston: Pearson

Next, in 4-5 pages (excluding title and reference pages), write your thoughts on how your family’s history and generational patterns have affected your personal growth and how this affects you still today. Describe your genogram – explain the relationships and patterns using language from the text (ex: close relationship, cut-offs, enmeshed/distant relationships, conflicted, triangulated, etc.). Consider what family values, guide your purposes and priorities today as a counselor and how do these experiences influence your beliefs about what causes suffering and what helps people change? Include a section addressing “New Insights” gained through completing your genogram and compare this paper writing experience to the first paper written about your family of origin. First person (“I”) may be used as appropriate. APA formatting required.
