Background
Creative Energy’s steam utility has been
in operation since 1968. Their steam
plant is located at 720 Beatty Street, and has six gas-fired boilers. Two,
smaller steam to hot water converter stations are located in the North East
False Creek (NEFC) area. The company also owns and maintains approximately 14
km of steam distribution mains in downtown Vancouver, and hot water
distribution mains in NEFC2. The existing steam plant serves over 210 buildings in
Vancouver’s downtown core and provides the lowest cost source of energy in the
city.
Of the 6 gas-fired boilers, 4 are at the
end of life or approaching end of life. However, because of lack of capacity to
meet existing demand during cold months (high season), the boilers cannot be
replaced without increasing capacity first.
