Aim: The aim of this assignment is to
introduce you to the type of questions you can expect in your tests and exams
and literature available.
Assignment: Provide a well referenced
answer to the following questions.
Each answer must include an Introduction,
literature review and discussion followed by a conclusion and reference list.

QUESTION 1 – ANTIDOTES & ANTIVENOMS

Your organization/ the National Department
of Health has requested your assistance in standardising the availability of
key antidotes/ antivenoms for different poisons/ envenomation. They have asked
you to give feedback to their Toxicology Strategic Planning Committee.
Your organization will provide the
necessary authority and training for personnel should any of the antidotes be
regarded as "outside" of your current scope of practice (ie. you need
to consider each, regardless of current scope)
Your recommendations need to be substantiated
by the latest and best level of evidence. If you cannot find specific evidence
that applies directly to your clinical setting then utilize evidence that
relates broadly to emergency medical care.
QUESTION 2 – TOXICOLOGY [50]
Just as you start your shift, you are
called to a tricyclic antidepressant (TCA) overdose.
Discuss the epidemiology, prevalence,
progression of clinical presentation, and management of a TCA overdose using
the latest evidence based best practices that applies directly to a South
African context, failing which international standards will also be accepted.
