The introduction should briefly introduce the topic of focus and contain the paper’s thesis. The thesis is the main idea of the essay. It is usually a one-sentence (or occasionally two-sentence) statement. It typically appears in your introduction or introductory paragraph, often at its end. By placing the thesis early in the essay you let readers know what to expect as they read on. Although it comes early in the essay, you will find that it’s often easier to formulate the thesis later in the writing process. (This is because we tend to work out our ideas in the actual writing process.)
