The objective of this assignment is to develop skills in reading and extracting information from
articles on indoor air quality in the literature.
Deliverable 1. Select articles that you will be reading. You should have four articles in total.
One article will be an “overview” article and the remaining three will be specific investigations
on the same general topic.
Overview articles include Keynote articles associated with the Indoor Air 2014 conference (or
similar), 10 Question articles from Building and Environment that address an indoor air quality
topic, or review papers. Some examples of each of these will be discussed in class. Your three
other papers should be from specific investigations on your topic. Some of the ground rules for
all four of your articles: Note that 2), 4), and 5) are soft requirements – it is better to have good
articles than to meet these rules, but you need to provide a justification if you violate any of
them.
1) All must come from high-quality peer-reviewed archival journals. Examples that are common in the field are Indoor Air, Building and Environment, Journal of Exposure Science and Environmental Epidemiology, HVAC&R Research, Science and Technology of the Built Environment, Environmental Health Perspectives, Aerosol Science and Technology, Environmental Science and Technology, and Atmospheric Environment. However, there are many more.
2) Ideally, at least one article should come from before 2000. Note that many search engines are incomplete for many journals before 1990 (or so). For some topics this will be difficult, please come talk to me if this is an issue.
3) Ideally, I should not be an author on any of your articles. This is done to supplement the perspective you get from me in the course already. If this is limiting your chosen topic, come talk to me and we can find alternates.
4) No more than two of your articles should come from the same research group. Ideally, at least one article should come from researchers in Asia or Africa, one from researchers in North America, and one from researchers in Europe, but if you need flexibility on this, come talk to me.
5) Ideally, at least two of your specific investigation articles should not be included in the
overview/review paper
