Description
The paper is based on an understanding of both cultural anthropology as a field, and the sub-discipline of material culture.
This assignment asks you to choose a specific Indigenous Canadian object or art form (including sculpture, music, dance, etc.)
You can use indigenous cultural websites, news media, and/or museum collection and write a paper:
- Summarize background information, such as its history, how it ended up in a museum/gallery in Canada-or how/why it is being used, displayed, or presented in other contexts.
- Provide details about its creator(s) or artists and their community/culture
- Discuss how the object's use (if relevant) has changed over time.
- You could choose a cultural practice, art form or spiritual practice that has been re-introduced into a community. Discuss its past/orgins, how it has changed and what impact it has on people who take part.
- Be creative in your choice, and choose an object, art form, or practice you feel strongly about to explore its cultural history.
- All work must be cited and your analysis and discussion of the object (and indigenous community/group/nation) must be backed up by 2 academic-quality external research sources (this does not include the museum site).
