The Pew science news survey will be used in the context
of modeling “BLAME” on a (somewhat haphazard) collection of other responses.
The interpretations of the variables are available in the codebook for the
survey.
The “BLAME” variable is the selection made in response to
the following question.
"Which of these do you think is the BIGGER problem
when it comes to news about scientific research findings? [RANDOMIZE RESPONSE
OPTIONS]
1 The way news reporters cover scientific research
findings
2 The way science researchers publish or share their new
research findings"
The interpretations of the remaining variables are
available in the codebook for the survey. Many of the variables are have
ordered categorical responses given by numbers with 3-5 categories and, in some
cases, categories for declined responses. For the purposes of this
model-building effort, these will be treated as numeric variables. Such
variables as explanatory variables are often used as categorical variables.
After some data cleaning, the data set is restricted to
complete cases. This limits generalization of the results to individuals who
would provide responses to the selected variables.
