In the Stanford Prison Experiment, subjects were randomly assigned to the roles of guard or prisoner and then enacted these roles in a simulated prison in the basement of the Stanford psychology building. The experiment became too real--the guards began mistreating the prisoners, and some of the prisoners suffered psychological breakdowns.
