- The war that has been remembered as the American Revolutionary War or the War of Independence held unclear goals at its beginning and went on for well over a year before there was a Declaration of Independence. Debate over the proper course of action and where loyalties must lie could be crude and violent but could also be expressed in thoughtful political writings, such as the two pieces here. Which is more persuasive and why? While it may be easier to side with Thomas Paine, as we know in hindsight that those favoring the revolution won, did James Chalmers make any points that were reasonable for 1776?
- Length requirement: three full pages (minimum) to four full pages (maximum)
