Worksheet for
Laboratory 7: Genetics
(The worksheet has
exercises to build knowledge on basics of the genetics. Watching the videos is
required to be able to complete the exercises. Besides, the exercise also
demands other theoretical and practical knowledge from your lab manual and
PowerPoint notes)
Activity 1:
Monohybrid Cross
Monohybrid cross represents the Mendelian experiment of genetic
cross between two individuals involving inheritance of a trait (one gene). A
gene is made of two alleles, so we are talking about four alleles in these
types of monohybrid crosses. Watch the short video below explaining the
experiment on a monohybrid cross for flower color of plants and complete the
following exercises.
NOTE: To complete the exercises below, along with the
information from the video, you will need to understand the concepts of
genotypes, phenotypes, homozygous gene, heterozygous gene, dominant and
recessive alleles, Punnett’s square. Please study the lab manual and resources
given in the PowerPoint notes before you attempt the exercise.

1.
What are true breeds or pure breeds? (0.5
points)
2.
Draw a Punnett square to show the cross between
homozygous dominant and homozygous recessive flowers. Purple color (P) is the
dominant and white (p) is the recessive allele. Interpret the results of the cross
in terms of genotypic and phenotypic ratios of the offspring produced. (1
point)
