This essay requires you to demonstrate the skills common to argumentative essays. These skills are centered around reasoning rather than research. Your goal is to persuade your reader of the merits of your reasoning.
TOPICS:
Only certain topics lend themselves to this kind of essay.
Do not select a topic for which there are demonstration paragraphs in the handouts.
This is NOT a research paper and must not use any research or internet sources.
Topics that require (or would benefit significantly from) research are not options for this essay.
Most controversial topics (such as, abortion, capital punishment, cloning) require research.
Therefore, avoid a controversial topic.
Find a topic that can be debated from general experience as an idea alone.
“General Experience” means experiences most people have had or are familiar with.
Topics that are outside most people’s experience are not sensible choices.
