This is essentially a creative writing assignment with the purpose of exploring certain moral dilemmas in business through dialogue. Once again, this is not a research assignment, but a creative assignment.
Read the Case Study on Merck & Co., Inc. (pages 279-283 of Business Ethics: The assignment is to write a short story (or short screenplay) where the two main characters are Dr. P. Roy Vagelos and Dr. William Campbell. The main purpose of the assignment is to explore the moral dilemmas these two characters face through dialogue. The main moral dilemma, of course, is whether to invest the time and money into a cure for river blindness. Assume Dr. Campbell wants to find a cure, and assume Dr. Vagelos is hesitant (it is Dr. Vagelos who must ultimately make the decision). Show them arguing (rationally) about whether to pursue this goal, and again, try your best to explore all the moral avenues of this dilemma through dialogue. Give them character, create drama, use humor, whatever you like, but don’t lose sight of the philosophical substance of the assignment. The deeper purpose of the assignment is to show me that you can truly get into the heads of people facing a real moral dilemma in business.
