ABSTRACT
This small-scale quasi-experimental research was conducted to investigate the effectiveness of Info Gap game in improving students’ speaking skills in ESL classroom and explore the students’ perception of Info Gap game. The study participants were 32 mixed-ability students of Year 5 from a government primary school located in urban area of Kuala Lumpur who scored Band 2 and 3 in previous classroom based speaking assessment. Info Gap game is a communicative game based on Communicative Language Teaching which implemented in pairs within 15-20 minutes for 6 sessions. The results from the paired sample t-test indicated that there is a significant difference between pre and post-test speaking scores of experimental group students. The students’ speaking skills improve significantly after the implementation of Info Gap game. In addition, the independent sample test also revealed that there is a significant difference between control and experimental group. Meanwhile, questionnaire and semi-structured interview session revealed that the students believe that Info Gap game is a fun and interesting game which helped to improve their speaking skills.
