Description

Unit 3: SPSS Statistics Assignment

Instructions:

Please do this assignment in Microsoft Word. Unless specified (i.e. for tables), your answers do not need to be in APA format. Make sure it is clear which question you are addressing and that the formatting is neat and organized. In order to do this assignment, you will need to access the ECLSK Course Dataset. It is located in the “Dataset” module on the left hand side of the Blackboard page for the course. Please open the dataset, create a new syntax file where you can save your work or add to the syntax file you created for the Unit 2 assignment. You will want to save the syntax for the analyses you run so you can make changes and build upon this work in future assignments.

Descriptive Statistics

1.           For this assignment we will be using two variables below: Examine these variables in SPSS. Are they continuous or categorical? Take a look in variable view. Run the appropriate descriptive statistics (frequenices/percents, or mean and SD) on both of the variables. Write a short paragraph describing these variables including the percent missing for each variable and either the percents or mean/SD as appropriate, also note the sample size.

a.       t2parinr: Parent involvement (note: this is a categorical variable, make sure you use t2parinr NOT T2PARIN).

b.      X1NUMSIB: Number of Siblings in Home (note: this is a continuous variable)

Logistic Regression

1.           For this assignment you will use a variable showing whether parents were very involved or not very involved as reported by the child’s kindergarten teacher (t2parinr) in the spring of kindergarten as the dependent variable. You will use the number of siblings in the home (X1NUMSIB) as your independent variable of interest.

2.           Write a research question that you would use to address the relationship between these variables.

3.           Write a hypothesis to go with your research question. Is it directional or non-directional?

4.           Run a logistic regression testing whether more siblings in the home predicts a decrease or increase in likelihood of having a parent that is very involved at school. Paste the output in to the assignment.

5.           What is the sample size?

6.           What is the regression coefficient? Is it statistically significant?

7.           What is the odds ratio?

8.           Interpret the odds ratio by turning it in to a percent. What does it mean for the likelihood of whether the child’s parent is very involved?

9.           Take this information and create an APA formatted regression table. (Example Table on Blackboard).

10.       Write 2-3 sentences describing your results in words.
