USB provides both data and electrical power to connected devices. With Power over Ethernet (PoE) Plus, an Ethernet switch can do the same. It can provide up to 25 watts of power over the UTP access link. This is sufficient for voice over IP phones, surveillance cameras, and most access points. It is not enough for desktop or laptop computers. However, some switch vendors offer higher wattages in their products, which are enough to support at least laptops. In the future, these may become standardized.
