What you have submitted does not fulfill the assignment; the
assignment instructs you to choose an essay from Chapter 18 in the textbook:
“Are we in a race against the machine?” OR from Chapter 20: “What’s there to
eat?” You seem to have summarized the chapter introduction of Chapter 18. You
did not analyze and respond to one of the actual essays.
The assignment asks you to write a paper in which you
identify the argument an author makes and respond to that argument. Is the
author effective or not, and why? In an effective response to a text, you need
to identify the author’s main argument and look at the specific ways in which
he/she supports the argument throughout the essay.
Then, you need to explain, in detail, why the author was
effective or ineffective. In doing so, you should give examples that show HOW
the author built an argument by using examples, statistics, stories or other
evidence as support, and explain why those examples were successful or not in
building an effective argument. Remember, this is a response to a single essay,
not a paper on the topic in general.
The best way to organize your essay is the
following:
• Introduction: An
introduction for this assignment should provide context on the topic of your
paper then describe, briefly, the basic points in your response to the text.
Your introduction must also identify the author’s main argument and indicate
whether the author's argument is effective or not – this is the thesis
statement for your paper. You also need to include the title and author of the
essay in your introduction to provide context for your analysis.
• Body: Explain and
support your position using examples from the essay (either agree OR disagree
with the author). Analyze the author’s argument in detail and explain why
he/she is right/wrong. Your paper should include multiple body paragraphs.
• Conclusion: An
effective conclusion should reemphasize your thesis statement and briefly
highlight the main points within your paper. A complete paragraph is 5-8
sentences.
Please carefully review my comments within the text of your
submission and/or within the rubric; if you have questions, please let me
know.
