Writing thank you notes is a
skill and showing gratitude for how people help you is very much a
characteristic of a professional. For this assignment you need to send a thank
you note to someone who has helped you over the course of this semester. It
might be an advisor, a guest speaker in one of your classes, someone you
interviewed with, a scholarship donor, etc. Your note must be
professionally presented and may be handwritten or typed and can be sent as a
hardcopy or email--whichever you think appropriate. Use your professional
judgement. This will be an actual note you send and scan to be submitted in
Canvas. You will want to complete this assignment within one or two days of
receiving the help—anytime during the semester.
A couple of things about writing Thank You notes:
1) Think carefully about what should be included in a Thank You note to be professional. You want it to be specific for the person and recognize what s/he did for you. Draft your note and if it could be sent to anyone about anything ("thanks a lot for your help"), then you need to revise. Let the person know how s/he help you; what did it mean to you?
2) Notes must be sent in a timely fashion--one to two days after an interview or the person has spoken in your class or....after the event for which you are thanking him/her.
