You should begin with a summary of your article, include the title of the article and the author’s name. Then discuss the context- is your article is in response or connects to something going on in the world. Then you will want to discuss audience and purpose – these make the foundation on which you will discuss the other rhetorical devices. You can bring in your thesis/claim at this point or delay it. Your thesis/claim will be a statement about the rhetorical effectiveness of the devices at work in the article. Then you will want to analyze the rhetorical devices that you have read about in the book and we have discussed in class- bringing them in and discussing how they support your thesis/claim (how they contribute to the effectiveness or do not make it effective) Stance/tone ethos understanding of audience Word choice pathos clear purpose Assumptions logos context This enlightenment is the goal of analyzing the rhetorical situation: to go beyond the surface of a subject and really enter into an educated discussion. Readers of your essay should be able to view the photograph or read the article in a much more sophisticated way, seeing the many layers of meaning there.
